Pyrolysis
BIOMASS PYROLYSIS PROJECT
This Project, known as BIORECOS (“Modular pyrolysis plants for the production of electricity from agroforestry biomass”) is currently being carried out; the phase of designing of the biomass pyrolysis pilot plant is finishing, and it is finally to be built.
OBJETIVES
The main objective of the BIORECOS Project consists of the design and building of a modular-type demonstration plant that makes possible, through the process of biomass pyrolysis, the production of charcoal and/or activated carbon, as well as generating electrical energy through the use of gas from pyrolysis in micro-turbines.
RESULTS
A complete characterization of the pyrolysis process of various types of biomass has been carried out and, with the results obtained, the most suitable and versatile pyrolyzer for the process has been designed and the most suitable technologies for utilizing this pyrolysis gas for electricity generation have been analyzed.
Finally, a pilot plant was designed whose main unit consisted of a rotary kiln where the biomass pyrolysis can be carried out, while the gas that is generated in the process is utilized in a micro-turbine to generate low-power electrical energy.
The construction of the pilot plant will begin in the near future.
